New Term Starts

Full Term started today. Another intense 8 weeks of learning (and playing) for the students of Cambridge University. It was a cold, cold day but the dusting of snow, clean cold air and bright blue sky offered a fresh start to the New Year.

Halloween

It’s that time of the year. In the run up to All Hallow’s Eve, the Cambridge ghosts are particularly active..well certainly the popular ghost tours are. Scudamore’s and the Tourist Information Centre offer a combined tour, 45 minutes on a punt gliding along the Backs in the dark followed by a 45 minute introduction to the town’s ghostly inhabitants. The Mill Pool punt station is …

The Circus Comes to Town

I love Midsummer Common! It hosts many annual events, Midsummer Fair, Strawberry Fair, Bonfire Night and the circus. A place which everyone can enjoy all year round. Walking, cycling, sitting watching the river flow and the colourful narrow boats,  seeing the rowing eights glide by, flying a kite, enjoying a pint at the Fort St George or a …

The Punt Chauffeur

Nick is one of the few full time punt chauffeurs, working the river all year around. The punt companies hire in casuals for the main tourist season, some of whose commentaries can be “economic with the truth”! Such a shame and so unnecessary as the history, the architecture, the characters and the real stories are fantastic enough with no need for embellishments. This is not the case …

High Water

What a Summer! Finished a Ghost Tour on Friday Evening just before the heavens opened! Biking home up Castle Hill in a torrential downpour with torrents of water rushing down the hill. Saturtday saw the Cam burst its banks and very high water leading to a suspension of punting as the increased flow of the …

Olympic Torch

The Olympic Torch left Trinity College at 6.35am this morning. After a run around Trinity  Great Court it took to the most traditional of Cambridge transportation..a punt!Despite the early start and the pouring rain crowds turned out to mark this once in a lifetime occasion. Both Trinity and St John’s had opened their gates along “The Backs” to allow the general public …

Beak First

The anual charge of the duck brigade. It’s about a 250 metre waddle from the River Cam to the Market Square but the duck’s know that this little bit of effort on their part always pays dividends…Russel and Shelley are there to serve breakfast.   Cambridge Open Studios 2012 takes place in the 4 weekends in July. …

Queen’s Beasts

Two tours today on a wet, wild and windy Cambridge! While biking home this evening my attention was caught by a row of contemporary sculptures along the river bank at King’s College. Not a great photo I know but the what a sight to behold, especially with a real live cow in the foreground! Cambridge, …

Goodbye Mr Asbo

The river levels have fallen and the punts are back gliding up and down the River Cam, but one familiar resident of the river has left. Mr Asbo is the name given to a male swan who, over the years, has struck fear into the hearts of rowers on the Cam, often launching attacks on …

A Punt Free River Cam

A rare sight indeed. After very wet week, topped off by excessive rain yesterday, the River Cam was officially closed to punt traffic. The high water, and in particular the strong currents in the swollen river lead to the closure for safety reasons. The Punt companies business is already suffering due to this April being particularly full of , …
